do i need to pass algebra 1a?

this semester i have algebra 1a,
next semester i have algebra 1b. do i need to pass algebra 1a to go to algebra 1b? because passing algebra 1a doesn't seem possible right now.

my algebra 1a teacher is hard to learn from and not many people are passing that class.
however, my algebra 1b teacher is nice, along with easy teaching skills, like an elementary school teacher. I know because that teacher taught me pre-algebra in 9th grade and i passed.
