For example, there is 2 homes in one building. The next buliding has another 2 homes in one building and so on? How come they are not seperate?

I don't know about the UK, but in NYC houses are built in rows to save space and lower construction costs. They're also easier to heat. There are individual totally separate homes too, but in cities like New York, Chicago, London, where space is at a premium, more residences can fit this way.
