1) making offerings to deities; candles tend to be offerings.
2) various religions would accept offerings of oil for their lamps as well as candles as donations to the temples
3) It tends to get dark at night when you have yet to invent electricity.

Every story or archaeological find of religious ritual importance has fire mixed into it in some way. That it has moved from large wood fed fires and petroleum torches to candles is tied directly to the environment in which religious rituals takes place. There cannot be large uncontrolled fires in buildings. Thus, the very controllable candle.

i think it started way back when it first started..haha..sounds stupid but im sure they didnt have lights back then and they had to use candles to shine some light on what they are doing..since they casted spells mostly at night..

Actually it started before the light bulb was invented.. and
people used to hide their beliefs and meet in secret places,
such as caves and when they needed light they lit candles...
