the atomic number of an element is equal to the number of proton(s) or electron(s) in that element. for carbon (C), this number is 6.

in case you need to look up other elements, here's a quick link: http://education.jlab.org/itselemental/index.html

6 protons, 6 neutrons (in most favorable isotope) and 6 electrons. Carbon is # 6 on the periodic table, so it has 6 protons by convention of the periodic table. For a neutral atom the number of electrons always equals the number of protons. Carbon has an atomic mass of 12 nucleons, which equals 6 protons + 6 neutrons for the most favorable form (Carbon-12). An atom is mostly empty space, so to model an atom think of a baseball suspended above the pitcher mound (protons and neutrons) the middle of a baseball stadium and a small flying knats circling the exterior of the stadium. The electron is 1/1800 the mass of the proton. Everything else is empty space.

carbon has several isotopes: all have 6 protons and six electrons. Carbon 12 has 6 neutrons, carbon 14 has 8 neutrons, etc.
