People destroy the environment whether or not the are industrialized. Long before the industrial revolution the forests in Europe were wiped out to make way for farm land. The fertile lands that was the cradle of civilization in Iraq was turn into a salt marsh by over irrigation, Even now tropical rain forest are being destroyed by primitive slash and burn agriculture that has been practiced for centuries. Industrialization has provided the resources so we have the luxury of worrying about the environment instead of getting enough to eat , We can and should as a society spend some of our excess on preserving the environment, but if we do not provide for our own survival, who are we saving the environment for.

No. Developing countries have little choice but to try and find a way to catch up to the more developed nations, even if this means polluting the environment in the process. Industrialization is necessary for social, political and economic progress. It is the developed world that causes the most damange to the environment (namely large multinational corporations). We need an economic system based on production for need rather than profit, but I believe that avoiding environmental destruction all together is impossible.
