I can't say that I've had any personal experience with water dragons, but I would assume that they need more height and humidity to their enclosure, along with sections of clean water which makes them probably more difficult to care for.
A 55 gallon sounds ideal for an adult bearded, but they can rip you up financially when you first get it. Well, maybe not.. for me, I had to buy the enclosure as well :P A baby should be kept in something not so big, a 20 gallon long would be good. They can be a little overwhelmed in such a huge enclosure. OR you could just block off a section of your bigger one if you don't want to go looking for something smaller, only to be replaced because it'll grow out of it fast!
Now, I've had my beardie for two years and he's such a sweet little guy. Very tame, I've never been bitten. I wouldn't necessarily say that it's a good type of lizard for a beginner, but you have to know what you're doing.
I've said this in practically every thread, but visit this site: http://www.reptilerooms.com
It's such an amazing site and people there can answer all of your questions. PLUS it has really great caresheets on both types of lizards you're interested in!
Good luck with your choice, and make sure you do the research before bringing one home!

A water dragon won't be able to be kept for very long in a 55gal. They need height, the higher the better. A homemade enclosure is usually needed. They need large pools to swim, and the water must be kept spotlessly clean. They are definitely more difficult to keep. A beardie will do great in a 55 gallon. I applaud you for doing your research on all of the species you've been asking about....I'm sure you will make an informed decision. A couple of excellent helpful websites that will tell you what you need:

in the event that they have been finished grown adults, i might say the Water Dragon. Water Dragons get a touch extra advantageous than beardies do, and can have the finished component approximately length. even nevertheless, a beardie has the potential to look like a much extra frightening opponent, and strikes swifter on the floor.

A 55 gal wont be enough for a water dragon, Beardies, though, would love it. Work wise W/Dragons are alot of work, water has to be cleaned regularly, whereas the beardies, you can pull out their poo as you see it getting done(stops the nasty smells building up & grossing out your house. As for more fun, it's beardies hands down, especially when they get their head bobbing & dance happening. Mine follow me around the house when i get out a mandarin, my kids think they are the best

hi, i would go with a BD, i've got two. they're easier maintenace than a WD and cool. my friend had a WD and it seems that they don't live as long as BD and more prone to health problems. BD's are friendly and hardy. look online and learn more about 'em. hope it helps some.
