Say for instance you might hate a public figure/celeb and bad mouth them all the time but if it came to meeting them you would act different. Let me give you an example. I was told a story recently about the taoiseach of ireland bertie ahern. Basically he was visiting the set of an irish program in the ongoing fight to promote the irish language. I was told this from someone who witnessed it. I thought it was hilarious the way he told it. The workers on the set all knew the taoiseach was coming and one woman in particular was giving out sh**it about him coming. She was supposed to of been furious and saying she wasnt shaking his hand etc. Anyways later in the day the taoiseach arrived and he shook everyones hand on the set. This woman who was giving out sh***it about him apparently turned to putty the second he shook her hand :P haha. Is it something to do with these peoples charm that this happens. When that story was told one of the lads butted in and said to .............

... to imagine if someone famous who you hated (he used bono as his example) came up to you. He said you'd just turn to putty and just thinking about it im sure i would even tho i dislike bonos personna. Why does this happen with people??? They clearly dont like these people yet on the moment they just turn to putty. Interesting isnt it :P

It happens because we don't like something about them...something they've done or something they've said. We imagine them to be a person of little worth or phony or whatever you can drum up. Then the moment comes where you're standing in front of them and you catch a body movement or eye contact or something they had said to the person standing next to you that makes them seem OK after all. When they take your hand and look at you, it gives you a different perspective on the person you had imagined to be something else!

It's probably a better sociological question than psychological. People put a "face" forward for who they're with. In the woman's case: her coworkers. But when it came to meeting the visitor, she put on the face she had been taught in her family, to be polite. Often we encounter problems of varying degrees because 2 or more of our personnas collide. Then we have to reassess, and we usually are not sure what to do, so we do nothing with authority. If the lady has thought about it, and resolved her situation, her reaction could be very different.

My initial reaction is to say it's because people are full of sh*t a lot of the time. But now that I really think about it, it's probably because they honestly believe this famous person is more important than they are as a human being. To make themselves feel better about that, they talk smack.

When someone is loud and repetitive about any particular issue, look to see if the exact opposite is true, often times that's where the truth lies.
