OK, why if so many people don't care do they answer just to tell you that? I'm confused! Not caring about labels is fine but labels are just words. They're not the enemy, they are a way of communicating. Without labels I would be hard pressed to, say, tell people what music I like.
"what are you into?"
"Oh, I dunno, Sounds."

Despite the fact that a lot of people who call themselves goths have a troubled enough past to have decided sunshine and pink bows was not for them, we're all a considerably more well adjusted bunch than most emo kids I have met. The music does not sound alike, the clothing does not look similar, and the outlook is miles and miles apart. Also, most elder goths I know are a little fuzzy on what emo even is.

I found this helpful when trying to explain it to people. Scroll down a bit.)

i'm a Goth and that i've got not had all people confuse me for Emo. then returned, you does not anticipate somebody wearing Victorian mourning outfits to be into the Emo stuff. So meh. i do no longer likely care.

Ok, i am a fan of all music including what people consider 'gothic' in this day and age. However, if you listen to true gothic music, i assure you it won't get mixed up.

True gothic music is along the lines of Bach or other old composers who did organ symphonies used in churches. Listen to that and you will understand the true beauty of gothic life including its architechture.

I'm sick of people associating emo with being violent to others or to ones self.

I tend to avoid both groups, because they seem so depressed.
