Just like connecting two screens on a desktop computer and being able to keep different windows open in each screen I'd like to be able to do the same with my laptop. Can I do that? If i can how?

yes, you can
plug in the monitor
right-click the desktop, select properties, and then settings
select the box with the number two in it, select "extend my desktop," set the resolution, drag "blue box 2" to the actual location of the laptop in relation to "blue box 1" and you're done

by "in relation" i mean that, if your second monitor is to the left of your laptop, then "blue box 2" will be to the left of "blue box 1"

I'm not sure if out of the box you can, but I'm sure there is a program online somewhere that will allow this. Go to the video cards manufacturer's website, and see if they have a program there.

yes you can connect a monitor...you do it the same as with a desktop computer...since you already know how to do that, it will be fairly simple for you...
