Transfers are available if you pay with a transit card or Chicago Card. For 25 cents, you can ride two extra CTA buses or trains within two hours of starting your trip. If you pay in cash, though, no transfers are available.

Here's how it works: 1) You pay for your first ride. 2) If you use the same card on a different CTA bus or train in the next two hours, 25 cents are deducted from the card. 3) If you get on a third CTA bus or train within the two hour period, nothing is deducted from the card.

In short, you don't do anything to get a transfer; it happens automatically. The right side of the farebox display shows the number of transfers remaining by displaying T2, T1, or T0.

They dont have transfers anymore. you either have to pay for each ride or by a one, five, or 30 day pass and then you can ride until it expires.
