Since I have a few of everything, (yes, I swear I own a zoo), I have a hard time deciding which is the "best." I think it all depends on what kind of interaction you want. My African Grey Parrot is my favourite (at this moment) besides my cats and dogs, because she is cuddly and plays games, chats, and still really loves her mummy. My other birds are pretty high up on my list too but.... Of course my rat is quite cuddly too....my hamsters not so much. Fish are at the bottom of that list and if you want a something to cuddle, I wouldn't go with the reptiles.
Ok, so to answer your question, I would have to say either a parrot or a rat.

A Jersey cow.
Cattle are charming creatures, very curious and affectionate. Jerseys are the smallest of the common dairy breeds, and they give exceptionally good milk. They keep the grass from getting too high, and they will come to the barn in the evening without prompting.

My favorite pet we ever had was a raccoon. We found her when she was about 6 weeks old. She was so sweet. She slept with us. We let her outside every morning and every afternoon when we came home, she came back in for the night. She used a litter box. Sometimes, she would so surprise us. We would open a drawer and there she was. Her name was Binky! When she was about 8 months old, she went out one morning and we know she was ready to start her own family. We loved her while we had her.

I think if I could not have a cat or dog, I would want a ferret. They can be trained and can go places with you. They are clean and cute. Be sure to get one for a reputible dealer---free of desease and wildness.
Reptiles are as cuddly as Tupperware and birds have all sorts of bugs in their feathers.

I would say a rabbit. I owned one for five and a half years. Rabbits are so cute and the best thing is that they are quiet. They are soft to pat and do the cutest things. They have differently personalities so if you prefer a calmer rabbit or a hyperactive rabbit you have the choice.

Rats can be truly awesome little companions. Some ppl compare them to dogs & I can see why. Rats are smart, playful, curious & affectionate. Ours all know their names & each has his or her distinct personality. They love to sit on my shoulder & our little dumbo girl enjoys playing with my earrings ;-)
