I know it is very hard to get accepted to Ivy leagues and UCs straight from high school, but what if you are trying to transfer from a community college to the four-year university? Would you say the chances of getting in are lower, the same, or higher?

There are many people from my community college that have been accepted and are attending UC Berkeley and other UCs.

Depend on your HS grades (+ SAT score) and community college grades. Also the school.

While there are some colleges that don't like to take transfers from community colleges, there are some colleges (usually public universities) that have special agreements with the community colleges in their area (they recognize students want to save $$). Typically when enrollment is high (lots of applicants) colleges would rather take the students as freshmen.

If your HS grades and/or SAT are not at the level they should be for the school you choose, then a community college (get great grades!) is the best way to go.

If you have a difficult time getting into the 4 year college of your choice because of poor high school grades or test scores, then an option is to go to a community college and DO REALLY GOOD to prove to the 4 year school that you do have promise and then they might take you. If you know where you want to go, its best to go straight to the 4 year school, unless you cannot afford it. Some people will go local and live at home and work to save for finishing up at a 4 year later. If you don't know what you want to do OR if your career only requires 2 years of school to get an entry level job, then a community college is perfect. You get your basics and maybe start a specialty and can either find a job to get going on or find something you really like and go from there. Usually, a HS grad will fit into one of these areas and that makes the decision a bit easier. I know many who just couldn't afford to move away from home to go to school, but were plenty smart. I also know alot that go to community college because that's all they could get into. Good Luck! Talk with a counselor and/or teacher/adult you trust to get their opinion; it will really help your decision process.

A community college may not help much with a university. The university may not accept ALL classes and you may have to take 1 year or more of make-up courses.

State Colleges are a different matter. They usually accept all courses from the Community College for Lower Division credit.

It's the same thing with HS. A HArvard or Stanford MAY NOT accept as many of your AP courses for credit as a state college in your state might.

To your STATE college system you might have 30 credits transferable.

Harvard may only accept a few of them. They might take your 2 years of foreign langauge, maybe your Calculus, maybe your Poly Sci, Maybe you Statistics.

They may not take the others.

They may only allow 12 credits or less.

Its easy to go from High School to a 2 year college. To go from a 2 year college to a 4 year university is difficult.

Some states, like Washington State has what they call the "2 + 2" program- 2 years local college, then 2 years at the University.

What makes the difference is the grades- better grades= more chance of getting in.

Good Luck

With your grades and stuff I would say you could get into a school like UC Berkeley or something. Don't go to a community college! Why would you when you could get in somewhere better??!?!

Your best bet is to go to a 4-yr college. Community colleges take anyone with a diploma or GED. Plus the experience of a 4-yr college is much better and you meet many people that you stay in touch with for years to come. There will be more people your age with the same likes and dislikes and an overall great environment. Best of luck!

Technically, it's harder to get accepted from a CC. This is because certain Universities don't take transfers. They only allow matriculating freshmen. This reduces your choice of schools. This policy is used only by a hand-full of Universities though, and they are usually the super selective ones.

You really need to check with the schools that you want to attend, and see what their policies are.
