May I suggest Yucca? There are many varieties from low growing bush type to the tall type, all with different widths and colors of leaves and different color and sizes of blooms. Low to no maintenance. They can be planted in combination for contrast, also.

rubber tree plants and butter cup will grow really good in texas . good luck .
