I'm refinishing an old cabinet/sideboard/? that I got for free from an old neighbor. I don't know exactly what it is, but it's low, like a sideboard, with three doors. When I got it, there were no knobs, but there is a hole in each door.

The problem is, the holes are RIGHT in the center of the doors! Is there any reason for this? Would this be an OK place to put the knobs? Or would it be better to drill new holes on the side, and if I did that, what would I do about the old holes?

I know there were a lot of questions there - any help or info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Just a note - as described, these are DOORS, not DRAWERS, which is why the center hole is unusual. I have yet to see a cabinet door with a center knob, because it actually makes it more difficult to open.

Leave the hole and use it.

The hole was placed not only for aesthetics but also some level of BALANCE in pulling the drawer.

Assume for a moment that the manufacturer; or craftsperson knew what they were doing; and do the same.

With no offense meant at all it's kinda like messing with Mother Nature. SHE chose that tree leaves would generally be Green. While one might not like the color Green; would it make much sense to paint them Blue?

ADD ON: Perhaps I've just been on the planet longer. If the piece happens to be old; center was common. Beyond that I go back to my original thought; Drawers or doors, there was obviously a purpose to begin with

Center placed knobs are common with antique furniture. Your best bet it to use the existing holes to place new knobs. It will be nearly impossible to patch the holes because they are prominently set in the center and any patch will be noticible. Find some nice antique hardware (www.rocklers.com) and screw them into the existing holes. Enjoy your piece! Don't sweat the functionality, you won't be opening those doors that often anyhow.

I've seen allot of old furniture with knobs in the center of the door. No, it's not unusual.

I have not seen this type knob or handle either. Makes me wonder if the original handles were special type. I would drill new holes and fill the old ones with wood filler and stain or color it.

I was a fastion thing years ago, so yes it would be the right place for a new knob.
You could fill the hole if you think you can disguise it.
