It's not a necessity but it definitely should be mandatory. Fewer people would f*ck around if everyone on the street was strapped.
More importantly though, owning a gun is a right granted to us by the US Constitution.

No, but I have a pretty good idea where you're going to come down on this issue.
My dad lives in a bad neighborhood in Florida and owns several guns for self-protection. I live in a very quiet community in Indiana and have no need for a gun, except perhaps for shooting defenseless furry animals. I do have a gun down at my grandmother's house, and was well taught how to shoot, but I have no need for it here in my home.
My girlfriend wouldn't let me have one anyway... and with my tendency to sleepwalk, I myself don't think it's a particularly good idea. You know what the stats say... you're more likely to kill a friend/family member on accident than you are to use your gun on someone who means you harm.
