That depends on a lot of things. Its usually safe, but I'd recommend you bring a friend with you, just in case. Are you going to a city or a village? The cities are fine.People are used to seeing foreigners there.

-Don't go out alone late in the night(after 10 PM or once you see there aren't many vehicles around). If you do take someone with you.
-Don't walk off alone into rural areas
-Don't wear clothes that are revealing(showing cleavage)
-Don't get into taxis alone at night.
-Beware of cabs with faulty meters that run faster then Asafa Powell.
-Don't forget to bargain for goods that you buy.Salesmen will usually try to charge you extra coz 1$=40 rupees(Indian currency.
-Don't eat in the open if you think the kitchen doesn't look healthy. You might get a tummy upset. As a precaution, drink only packaged drinking water-it costs about 1/3 $ a litre.
-Plan your journey well.Take a few maps along with you.
-People might stare at you, especially if you go to villages, but don't worry. Its only coz they don't see too many foreigner nationals.

Stay safe.Have a nice time!

India is safer than it sounds.
But it all depends upon the places you would like to visit. What your aim is.
Suggest you book tics, hotel, trips and all. Take the Govt. of India Tourist trips in coaches and not go alone. Coaches means groups.
Avoid taxi trips /excursions alone. But within cities, they are fine.

No offense, but Indians are not as free as the Western World. The culture of mixture of sexes has not reached the interior; only limited to Metros and bigger cities. But foreign girls do not understand this. They flaunt their body ( a big no no ) or ask for trouble in other ways.

Best is to dress modestly and go on serious business. Top body should be well covered .
And all will go well. I do know many who travel to India.

Google "incredible India" , ITDC and places you 'd like to visit. There are reasonable flights to most places now. Book into Govt owned Hotels and Yatri Nivas (if you want economical places to stay in) , and you will have a good trip.

Wish you best.

yes, it is totally safe.

in the cities, like in cities anywhere, you do have to be careful about your surroundings.
but no one wants to mess with a tourist, they are in general happy to see you, and when they find out you're american they are even happier, because they know how far it is, and that we can travel anywhere.
what they have in india are con artists. beggars, street magicians, astrologers, etc., who try to get you to give them money. don't do it, not even the beggars on the streets. But you have to take the money out of your pocket and give it to them. don't do that, and you don't lose anything.
what they don't have in india is violent crime. you simply are not in danger of being mugged or robbed or worse. it's not going to happen to a traveler. again, cities are cities, but once you get out you are fine.
you may occasionally get a man trying to hit on you, some think that american girls are easy from the movies, but just be strong and firm, most are more afraid of embarrassment than people are here, just say no loudly and they will go away.
india can be hard, but you can thrive there too. yes people will throng around you, because you're a foreigner, but be very clear that you are not giving away any money, and they will pick up on it.
read your lonely planet about travel in general, and about each place.
and dress modestly at all times. you do not need to cover your head, but please wear long sleeves and long pants at all times in public. you can get very light (not see through) material so that it's cool. i wear long sleeves and pants myself and i'm a man, it's just respectful there.

india is amazing and wonderful and difficult and an experience like no other. if you're called there, you should go!

each indian might inform you that that's secure.. and that i additionally say that that's secure, in spite of the shown fact that the ingredient which you would be able to desire to keep in mind is that there are various advantages to return and forth with a instruction manual or freind... see in case you return and forth with a freind then you definately get business enterprise and all that stuff and likewise in case you return and forth with a instruction manual, then the folk who're attempting to take greater funds from you, won't... to illustrate, if a shopkeeper sees which you're by myself and you prefer to purchase a shirt, then he might say the fee is someplace around 10$, in spite of the shown fact that if he sees you with an indian or somebody, hell in uncomplicated terms say approximately 5$ this is likewise bargainable.. so actual at end, it relies upon on you, in spite of the shown fact that my own determination could be to take an indian excursion instruction manual with myself...

Its safe but don't take it for granted, just like anywhere in the world..even in America. Dont look gullible. Do your homework with websites and prepare yourself. See the things as they are and dont interfere. Enjoy your stay and good luck.
