I just went to Walmart. She was 5 months and I'm very happy with the desision. She cried for about 10 seconds, that was it. I think it was more the sound, being so close to the ear.
Most places just want proof that you have had her first set of shots.
There is nothing "irreputable" about anywhere that pierces infants' ears. There would be a law if it was so terrible. All that matters is if you care about "the rite of passage". In other words, when she's older, she wont be bugging your for months to get hers pierced, because you will ahve already done it, and she wont go through being proud to see them on her ears for the first time because she will already have them. Does that matter to you, you are mom, you decide. I wanted my daughter to get used to them when she was little so she wouldn't be pulling them out and eating them as a toddler. Or asking for them at whatever age and pulling on them and playing with them constantly and getting them infected. Taht is actually what happened to me. My mom wanted to wait til I asked, and I did when I was 6. When I was in school, I played with them constantly, putting the backs on and off, until one day I put it on tightly, and didn't release the tension, and the back of the earring grew into my ear. My teacher came into the bathroom where she found me crying because my ear hurt and was all crusty. She pulled out the back with her fingernail and I bled everywhere.
Another friend on mine had her daughter's ears pierced at three when she asked for it, and the same thing happened. She hadf to have the earring surgically removed because her daughter pushed the back of it on so far that the front of it grew into her ear.
Sorry so long, I just wanted to defend myself from the onslaught of thumbsdown I'm sure to get from all the Ms. Pefect moms out there who think ear piercing is mutilation.

Acetaminophen side effects
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
In rare cases, acetaminophen may cause a severe skin reaction that can be fatal. This could occur even if you have taken acetaminophen in the past and had no reaction. Stop taking this medicine and call your doctor right away if you have skin redness or a rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling. If you have this type of reaction, you should never again take any medicine that contains acetaminophen.
Stop taking acetaminophen and call your doctor at once if you have:
- nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, loss of appetite;
- dark urine, clay-colored stools; or
- jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

From personal experience, places like Claire's and Wal-Mart, where they use the piercing guns, hurt ALOT.
I've had my ears pierced twice, and both times I was old enough to remember. Let me tell you- it hurts less at an actual piercing shop done by a professional with a properly sterilized needle.
As far as age, I would ask a piercing professional. I know the places that do it with a gun have an age requirement, but I don't remember what it is.

The guns at the places at the mall punch holes in your daughter's ears rather then using a needle to pierce through and can not be sterilized as said before. If you are so determined you should talk to a reputable piercer about it.

My opinion is that you should wait until she's old enough to really ask/take care of them herself.

I got both my daughters done in the mall. I didn't give them any Tylenol. It only pinches just make sure you snap the back of the earring back to the second notch to give the ear room to swell.

I got my daughters done at the mall at about 5 months. It's just a little pinch and it doesnt' even really bother them much after. You could give her a little tylenol if you are really worried about it.

Please don't take her to the mall! First of all, piercing guns CANNOT be sterilized (they melt in an autoclave) and are terribly unsanitary. Secondly, instead of a nice clean hole like a needle gives, they crush the skin and cause trauma to the surrounding tissue.
Why no wait and take your daughter to a reputable and knowledgeable piercer when she ASKS to have piercings?
