What it suggests to me (both the artwork and the words) is a real-life "Red Badge of Courage." (If you wish to read that great short novel, please go to the second link.)
He clearly saw a lot of hard fighting: Manassas, Bull Run (yep, they ARE the same, but there were two battles) and Gettysburg.
It looks like a very good book (I was able to read the first 6 pages on Amazon.)
