Hi, I can tell you have not changed oil regularly.I would get new gaskets for valve covers .I would flush out the engine and add new oil .I would watch the tail pipe for any heavy blue smoke and maybe every thing will be ok.You may get a few more miles out of the van.

Your problem is VERY simple!!! You are using the WRONG type of engine oil!!! NO Japanese engine will work it's BESt with wax based oils like Valvoline and it's ilk. Get a MOTOR flush and use Mobil One 0W-30 or ENEOS oil from JAPAN! There are OTHER good choices like Pennzoil Platinum and Ultra, and even CASTRO EDGE. READ your manual about the proper oil SPECIFICATION NUMBERS! Api and SAE service ratings mean next to NOTHING except that oil standards have upped over the years. TIP::: find a can of SEA FOAM with nozzle. Remove spark plugs, and insert nozzle into EACH cylinder until the foam RISES from the plug hole. Let it sit for fiftenn or twenty minutes. Crank engine around WITHOUT plugs for 15-20 seconds. Replace plugs and START engine. Your rings will have been POWER cleaned and you will NOT require new rings!! CHANGE your oil habits!!!! NO MORE cheap oil changes from bargain specials. Your TOYOTA deserves BETTER> SYNTHETIC oil only needs changing ONCE a year!!! Use ONLY genuine TOYOTA coolant in that engine, or your head gasket and alloys will begin to DETERIORATE!!! It is VERY important that you DO THIS!! For BEST results, use the newer Denso Iridium or TWIN TIP technology spark plugs! E-mail me BACK with your results!

get a air hose and coupler screw it into the spark plug hole add air. listen to the valve cover and the dip stick tube . If the air escapes into the lower engine it will be broken rings or piston.Air in the valve cover area it will be a valve be sure to listen to you exhaust pipe you can here a exhaust valve there. older cars listen to the carb for intake valve leak

To reach the rings you must remove the heads and the oil pan. Then you must properly remove the rod bearing caps and push the pistons out the top.
