It's got to be Grant. Not necessarily the most likable, nor even honorable, but he was the best and he was the first to understand how new technology and industry altered the face of war, and he used them.
Not only was he far beyond his contemporaries in this respect, he was far more capable that most of the generals in WWI.

Sherman was not a butcher, and Grant was not a drunken fool. Sherman ripped the guts out of the Confederacy, while Grant slammed it repeatedly in the face. The combination worked very well. Lee, Nathan Bedford Forrest, and Longstreet all failed to stop them in the end.
My favorite Civil War general is General Andrew A. Humphreys

My favorite civil War general was Robert E. Lee because I believe he was the best commander of all the generals in the war and what he had in certain arms and supplies and held off the Union and though at times pretty poor Union leadership but I still believe if he was the commanding Union general the war would have been over sooner .

my favorite civil war general was General Winfield Scott who was of the few who understood the seriousness and complications and recognized that the south had a lot of potential and by presenting the Anaconda plan the North was able to weaken the South greatly and blockade commerce and stop supplies and armament from going into southern ports. the anaconda plan was pivotal in weakening and eventually defeat the south where there economy depended on cotton, and other crops that had to be to exported to europe and such.

Forgive the choice of a Yankee (New Jersey) of Nathan Bedford Forrest. In a war council with two other Confederate generals, one of them Beauregard, they asked Forrest how to succeed in battle. He replied, "Get there first with the most men."
Winston Churchill began quoting Forrest in St. Louis, Mo., 1947 in his "Iron Curtain Curtain" speech. According to Churchill, Forrest ascribed his success in battle to, "I got there fustest with the mostest." For many years, people did not know what Forrest actually said.
