We recently had a problem with a Compaq notebook not powering up. We bought from Best Buy and purchased the extended warranty, which was expiring in 2 months. so we took it to Geek Squad. They sent it in, replaced the hard drive and returned it. ONE DAY after the warranty expired the computer wouldn't power up. I had a tech from my work IT dept look at it and the hard drive was labeled "repaired". I took back to Best Buy and they were adamant that they only use the highest quality brand new parts. Upon my request they removed the hard drive and it took a manager to admit that it was "repaired". After a few days of the manager making phone calls it was determined that they would replace the hard drive free of charge. I received a message yesterday from Best Buy that the hard drive was replaced but the motherboard is bad and will cost $640 (cash) to replace.
My question - can a hard drive replacement mask a bad motherboard? Does anyone have any suggestions? HELP Please!

So, do I have a leg to stand on with Best Buy? Can I insist that they should have known when it was still under warranty that it was going to go bad?

Wow! That sucks. A good technician should have spotted a bad motherboard immediately.
A "certified repaired" by HDD factory (especially Seagate) is not bad at all and carries factory warranty. It looks like they will give you a new hard drive but more than recover the expense on that big motherboard tag price that could buy you a new laptop.

I would suggest getting in a computer technician or help assistant to have a look at your PC.
