Is it even possible if animals have been living in a home for years? Just moved into a new home and the former owners had two dogs and a cat, and it smells disgusting in the basement.

I've lived with a house full of dogs and cats for 20+ years, and tried probably every urine removal product on the market. The best I've found is Urine Gone. Not only does it do the best job of any product in removing - not covering up- the smells of dog and cat urine, but it comes with a black light the helps you find the source of the smell.

However, if carpeting has been soaked in urine and allowed to remain for years, you have no alternative but to re-carpet. If urine has soaked into porous flooring, such as wood, then re-finishing would be needed. Even linoleum or some tile flooring may be porous enough for the urine to have soaked through, requiring replacement. The bottom of the walls may also have urine soaked in so bad that you may have to sand and re-paint, or even replace some of the dry wall.

But for $20, trying Urine Gone is worth the investment. Plus, the black light will help you find the exact spots to work on.

Go to your local vet and buy a product called Urine-Off. It will get rid of the disgusting cat and dog urine smells in your basement for good.

The site below will give you more detail on how the product works.

There are other brands out there that do the same thing, so if your vet doesn't have Urine-Off go with the brand they recommend.

Get some kind of ventilation going in the basement.

You should buy a black light; this will help you find stains that you can not see with the naked eye. It's not expensive at all.

Then purchase a urine stain remover; there are so many different products you can find at a pet store or in a pet catalog.

First step bleach the crap out of it, second step go to a good pet store and pick up a pet stain and odor remover, these work with enzymes, after all is dry it will smell better and you can paint or seal the floor.

Cat Urine! It really gags me! It gets into the carpet and stinks to high heaven and is very hard to get rid of. Dog feces is much easier to deal with.

Paint the walls and all wooden pieces. According to what the floor is made of, clean it accordingly. Keep the doors and windows open for ventilation.
