We need a government of some sort but it needs to be a government of the people and not as it is now. The problems with Social Security have a lot to do with the fact that government officials have civil servant pensions and don't have to worry about Social Security, and is therefore not a government of the people, for example.
The fact that Michigan is running out of money is, among other things, because some state employees are making more than $300,000 a year while there are people in Michigan barely able to get by: Because Michigan has the highest road limits in the nation which causes road damage which has to be repaired and that takes money from the state coffers; Because although Michigan has the highest unemployment in the nation, it's elected officials are the second highest paid in this country; Were the state a business of one nature or another they would have declared bankruptcy long ago but since it is a government, they simply raise taxes and go on with business as usual and that causes more people, and businesses, to leave the state and go elsewhere compounding the problem.
We need a government which protects the people that government represents, both in dealings with each other and with other governments, but too often that is not the case and so that causes things like the Michigan state shutdown on a state level and the number of people on a national scale who are exploring the option of leaving the U.S. and forming separate nations within the U.S. - put states seceding from the U.S. in your search engine and be amazed.
our original concept of government was for the protection of the citizens of the nation but we have gotten to the point now that we can rephrase the quote of J.F.K. to state, Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what it has done to you!! We can't survive without a government of some nature but when we have a government which sacrifices its own citizens for survival, we need to turn this question around to, can government survive without people and we see by the number of people leaving Michigan and the fact that the state shut down for 4 hours, that it can not.

back before government benefits were started, people seemed to make with the help of family and friends..
However, we now live in a completley different world. Then neighbors would help neighbors, Now they keep to themselves. People aren't as friendly and willing to help as they used to be..
My husband and daughter are disabled and also depend on the government benefits they recieve. So you make a very good point. I'm not sure we could survive wiithout government. No matter how bad it is.

Libs, as you call them, just took a play out of the Bush playbook. Use a disaster to create an excuse to promote your own agenda, is the name of the play. Only the disaster changes, and the agenda. Like an "end -around" in football. It can work for Libs, Cons, Moderates...and others. Now the conservatives are taking a play out of the Lib playbook...the community organizer/get involved and speak up play...we'll see if the commitment pays off in a few years, or if the silent majority will roll over and play dead again.
