I fight in medieval armored combat, in groups such as the SCA (the Society for Creative Anachronism). I make my own armor and weapons. This is not playing - it is as close to really swinging a sword on someone with all your strength as possible. My armor is made from hammered stainless steel/titanium alloy, thick aircraft aluminum, and thick, waxed leather. Our weapons are made from 1 and 1/4 inch thick solid rattan staves, and without our armor I could literally break bones, maim, or kill if I swung on someone. It is comparable to getting hit at full speed by a baseball bat sometimes. However, our armor is made so well that what would normally break a bone might only leave a bruise on us. I would trust my armor to carry me through a battle using real weapons if it was necessary. The only way to win a combat is to hit your opponent hard enough that he counts it as a killing blow - and you must do it before he hits you!
