Yahoo is a website in it's own right, anyone in the world can access yahoo no matter who they connect with.
If you left BT, the only thing you would not get is the email from BT

Hi,
You are getting "BT Yahoo!" confused with simple "Yahoo!"
If you look at the top of the page it will normally say either "BT Yahoo!" or just "Yahoo!".
Anyone can access the "Yahoo!" stuff, they just need a free "Yahoo!" account. Only BT customers can access the "BT Yahoo!" stuff.
