recently i was given a 75 gallon tank and i cant figure how to start the filter. I have tried almost everything?

Put the filter on the edge of the tank with the intake completely submerged. Fill the filter with water so it flows into the tank, then turn it on. The filter should pull water from the tank into the filter holding area, and then dump it back into the tank.
