I am considering buying an used Honda Accord and I am wondering whether I should buy a 2005 or later model that comes standard with airbags for the second row passengers, or a pre-2005 model that does not have those airbags. My wife and I will be driving the car, mainly for grocery shopping or short trips around town, and we have two young children (one is 4.5 yrs old and one is 1 yr old). Both my wife and I are inexperienced drivers and we have hardly driven after we got our driving licenses (I am a graduate student and I take the bus to school). This will be our first car and we will be driving it for at least two years.

Just like to mention that we will likely be putting our children in car seats in the second row in the forward facing position. For their ages, I don't think their car seats can be placed in backward facing positions.

Since you are both inexperienced drivers, I would spring with the extra $$ for the passenger airbags, especially if there are children involved. It's one thing driving yourself around, but when you have other lives to think about, you have to take those things into consideration. I'm not saying you and your wife are bad drivers, but knowing that the experience behind the wheel is slim, I'd rather be safe than sorry. Who knows, some other driver could plow into you and you'll be glad you have the extra airbags!

like the first guy said. the airbags are more harmful for kids then they are good. its a proven fact that they have more risk with the airbags then without it. if the kids were over 8 years then it would be better with the airbags but for now i would just focus on the front driver and passanger airbags for you and your wife and make sure the carriers are facing back not to the front so if you do hit something or get hit the kids dont go flying out. not making fun of anyone but here where i live we se alot of that. thats also how i found out about the airbags. 3 kids have died here in my city already because the airbag deployed while they were moving forward. like i said it causes more damage then good.

Airbags for small kids and infants have been shown to be more harmful then good. Most new cars offer the option for turning OFF the airbags for just that reason. Both of your kids should still be in a reverse facing child seat... that will do much better then an airbag. Although it IS a bit more boring for them...
