would the vehicle lose power and shut off?

it could normally fuel pumps stop working when you shut the vehicle off...then when you return it does not start...if it shuts of while running it could be various sensors normally items pertaining to the ignition...

It will shut off the car but not its power suply.
It can also cut off if you have a bad alternator with a weak battery.

yes that will happen when a fuel pump goes out.

Sure.

Could be a whole bunch of other things too.

Dead battery, Low battery, bad ground wire to engine, bad power wire to starter, bad power wire to battery, bad connection at battery post or terminals, blown fuse, bad key switch, bad starter, bad fuel pump, bad injectors, seized engine, broken connecting rod, no compression, no spark, bad oil pressure switch, broken timing belt, plugged fuel filter, broken rotor, cracked distributor cap, Anti-theft device, water in/on engine, out of gas, vacuum leak, bad gas, bad ignition coil, blown computer, faulty cam or crank sensor ...

It would do that. No fuel and your engine will not run.
