Guts are considered to be everything inside of you, so when someone says "I hate your guts", they generally mean they hate everything about you.

No, we don't hate each other. I have English and Irish relatives and have lived in close proximity to Scots and Welsh people, we have never been at each others throats. Why some Scots want to separate from the union is a complicated matter and has little to do with hate. Likewise, why the Irish fought numerous uprisings to be able to break free is a lot more complicated than a generalization such as Irish people hate the rest of us. The violence that took place during the Troubles and whatnot was committed by a small minority on both side and did not reflect the attitude of the entire population. If there was such a mutual hated, one could not travel across the United Kingdom of Great Britain or the Republic of Ireland as freely and as safely as one can. It would seem your professor should not be a professor at all if he is making sweeping generalizations such as that without any evidence.

the reason for people saying that is because Guts are disgusting so you kinda answered your own question if I'm gonna say something negative I will go for the Gold and say I hate_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ to some people are not willing to use vulgar slang so they say the worst possible clean thing they can say but what they are really saying is what I would say

It basically means that someone hates another person so much that they hate everything about them and everything connected to them, including their disgusting guts.

It means you can't stand anything about the person you said it to. It's a phrase used mostly through the elementary years of school.
