Turtles are messy. They leave a lot of food waste, and generate a lot of wastes. They mess up the pH, nitrate, and ammonia levels of the water and the debris in the bottom of the tank is decaying and adding hugely to the problem.

The best way to deal with this is to do what other experienced keepers do:

1. Make sure the tank is the right size. Honestly, the bigger the better for this issue. Aim for at least 10 gallons of water per inch of turtle length.

2. Use a powerful external filter rated at least twice as big as the tank- so a 50 gallon tank needs a filter rated for 100 gallons- 150 would be better. This kind of filter is expensive, so get a good one ot get your money's worth.

3. Either do a 'naked bottom'- no gravel, etc., or use a pretty small gravel (so it packs better with fewer open spaces). In either case, use a siphon vac to clean it weekly and change about 1/4th of the water at the same time.

4. Provide the right food in the right portions. Try http://www.austinsturtlepage.com for good diet guidelines.

ok what u can do is put a Repto filter in your tank. im guessing its about 40 gallons. well this filter can clan up to 40 gallons of water so it should keep it clean.. i have one and it works good for me. also if you are feeding your turtle pellets dont over feed because the extra food gets the water durty and he /she will poop more.. so yea just keep a good filter there and it should work. hope this helps.

There are these things that you put in tanks for turtles that last for like 2 weeks and it is white. U just put it in ur tank and it kills all bacteria in the tank. I can't remember what there called but they really work
