This page of Wikipedia will answer the first and third questions fairly well. Also, for those who responded and apparently didn't know who Dr. James Mortimer was, namely Beardo (above), he's a character from The Hound of The Baskervilles. He's a physician friend of Sherlock Holmes's Dr. Watson.

Similes, pronounced 'si-mi-lees', are comparisons that show how two things that are not alike in most ways are similar in one important way. Similes are a way to describe something. Authors use them to make their writing more interesting or entertaining. Similes use the words “as” or “like” to make the connection between the two things that are being compared.

For example:
"My father has a mind like a computer."

Have you read the book?
or are you reading an extract?

is he a good detective? or does he miss things?
is he quick at solving things? or is he slow?

look at the way he speaks to watson - is he nice? is he cruel? is he rude? is he patronising?
if someone spoke to you the way he does to watson how would you feel? upset? happy? angry?
is watson described as walking beside him or behind him?
does watson have to do the dull work while holmes is having fun?

a simile describes something in comparison to something else ...
'as hard as nails' 'love is like a ghost'

find the section on Dr Mortimer and look for the words 'as' and 'like'

when answering the questions remember to back up what your saying with quotes.
If you can make your Point, give Evidence and then Explain it.

surely if this was your homework then you sohould have read the book.

if the teacher were to ever make you stand up infront of the class to explain your answer then you would look quite foolish for doing a homework that you dont even know what you wrote.

do a search on him.. and a video about it and if you have enough time then read the book
