I've got an 01 Chevy prizm, when I put gas in, the idle speed jumps between 500 and 1500, Up and down for about 30 seconds or so. Has anyone else experienced this problem? How did you fix it?
It has 130,000 miles, I just replaced the Mass Air Flow sensor.

It seems if I just turn the key to on, without starting the engine, and wait until the gauge stops moving, it doesn't flunctuate.

you have liquid fuel getting into your vapor canister on your on board vapor recovery system. when you start it, the purge solenoid turns on to burn the vapors out of the canister, and instead it sucks in raw fuel causing the engine to run rich. i'm not familiar with your exact vehicle's setup, but most of the time it is a blocked vacuum line or a bad valve on top the tank. sometimes on chryslers you have to get the whole tank. if you go to a dealer they may have seen this, or their could be a technical service bulletin about this problem

It's just trying to reset the vacuum in the gas tank after you removed the gas cap and let the vacuum release.

30 seconds is no big deal.
Just be patient, and let it idle briefly after filling up.
