How come her face appears to be more injured in the first pic but in the second it looks normal?

It looks like the left side wasn't as badly injured as the right side of her face was. If you look at the first picture, you see mostly the right side, which is bloody and possibly mangled. In the second, you only see the left side, which appears to have been relatively uninjured in the crash.

I haven't looked at the photos, but I believe Diana died of internal injuries suffered from the crash. It perfectly possible that her face was spared, while the rest of her body wasn't. It's probably how she would have preferred it.

It may be the lighting and the angle that the pictures were taken that make them look different.

I imagine some of the facial blood came off when they put the mask on her face.
