I worked in the industry on the equipment manufacturing side and now do market consulting for a variety of sports/entertainment clients. I started at retail as a 23 year old, shifted over to the manufacturing side as a 26 year old and just turned 40 last month.

The best way to get into team/league work is to search out internships with the league, individual teams or the various corporate interests that surround the sport. This, of course, assumes you're young enough to sacrifice income for experience and contacts.

Upon graduation from university, I worked for a PR firm that had a promotiional contract for the league's 75th anniversary. I learned plenty and met many industry professionals, but ultimately decided to take a slightly different path in my career.

However, just to put the value of these internships in perspective, my two predecessors went on to become VP of Communications for the Rangers and GM of the Reading Royals in the ECHL, respectively.

It's not easy securing these positions, but well worth the effort if you really think you want to make a career in the team sports industry.

I am a consultant to both the NHL and NHLPA and have been since 1998. Prior to that I was affiliated with the Chicago Black Hawks from the early 60s though 1997, first as a player in their minor league system, then as a scout, and finally as an assistant to Bob Pulford (Keenan and I didn't get along).

I'm 66
