Depends on what kind of home you live in and how much time you have. Dogs are more of a handfull, while cats can take more care of themselves. But both pets need love, caring and affection.
Personally I would choose a cat.

Dog every time. Cats stink and they don't give to hoots about you, at least you get love and affection from a loving dog ;-)
