You pretty well said it. We have gone against "the grain" of what we derive for the Constitution, how to defend it, and the conservative economic, social, and judicial values thereof.
We "now [stand] for overspending, ineptitude, scandal..."
Overspending: our Congressional budgets (minus war and military expenses, which I support and understand) are considerably more than they were during the Clinton years. Clinton did veto select spending bills; G.W. Bush had not.
Ineptitude: Tom Delay and Dennis Hastert were unfriendly, incompetent, lobbyist-endearing, million-dollar-grubbing political panderers, not statesmen. Of course, the same arguments can be presented for Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Dianne Feinstein, and other prominent Democratic Congressmen. But, I thought the Republican party was the party of "morality" and "ethics." Also, I don't believe Bill Frist was a strong Senate Majority Leader, and I'm not so sure McConnell (who is a jerk, I know this because I live here in Kentucky and have relatives who have dealt with him) is a very strong or decisive Minority Leader.
Scandal: Don't get me started on the arrogance and indignity of Larry "it's raining men" Craig.
Torture: I'll have to do some more research into that, really.
Now, I'll be honest, I don't dislike George W. Bush. In fact, I support the tax cuts and business-friendlier legislation he has signed into law, as well as his initiative and leadership in this War on Terror. I think he's a nice, decent, upstanding, and even intelligent man. However, he needs to grow a backbone on the issues of out-of-control spending and controlling our borders. I also think No Child Left Behind is a strong abomination and totally sucks for our teachers and schools; Clinton was a better President in these affairs (no pun intended.)
Last case in point: I'm very close to registering for the Libertarian Party. You're welcome to join me. I have a longer list of reasons that I won't pontificate in this answer.

Yeah. The stupid Democrats. Let's list the stupid things they've done. Tax breaks for the rich. (Still waiting for trickle down from the Reagan years. Can't they be patient?) $4 gasoline. If the oil people lose money, AMERICA loses money. 100% increase in heating. I don't even know how they managed that one. Bankruptcy only for higher incomes. Heck, poor people take ENOUGH advantage of the rich as it is. Student loans hard to get. If you're smart enough to go to college, you should be able to sell drugs or something. War in Iraq. Bush TOLD them not to do it. They sabotaged those republicans with gay issues. They aren't gay. It's the liberal police. Urgh! Democrats! Why don't we just kill em off and put the president of GE on the throne!!!

As a fellow Republican I feel your pain. Our Party has been disgraceful as of late. Sure hope someone rises to the top to get them back on track.

Originally the Republican party stood for Individual rights, the diminshing of big government so we could have the big citizen. It was the working man's party. Now the dem's are. The Republican party's partisan politics, fondness of pork and rapid conservative-religious radicalism is helping alienate the average American from the party.

I admire you for being so honest. Most people cannot attain this level of honesty. For my part, I will say Republicans aren't all bad.

Maybe you should not have Bush steal those elections.
In a way it serves the GOP right, but at the cost of the natinon's well being.

Maybe they forgot to vote; or, perhaps, they don't bother to read the news, just let Liberals tell them the news.
