I'm 17, born in 1989, and i'm a huge fan of 60's, 70's rock. My favourite bands are The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Cream and Bob Dylan. The only band i listen to that was formed in my lifetime is Flogging Molly. I noticed that a lot of people in my school don't like modern rock or rap, and i was just wondering what you guys thought?

I think that rap is just really negative, stereotypical garbage. I mean, all the sampling in music and stuff. I'm not a big fan of rock today because it's really whiny and just power chords. Music from the 60's and 70's was really different and exciteing.

I have wondered the same thing. How many would answer as derisively IN PERSON? Easy to sling insults through a monitor. If the question is so exasperating, why answer??? If you want to set someone straight on what is and is not classical or correct someone on what is a song and what is a symphony, then do so POLITELY. When I first started listening to classical music several years ago, I did not know the difference between a symphony and a sonata or a concerto and an overture. I went for months with only the first movement of Beethoven's Violin Concerto. I did not know there was more to it than one movement. I simply have not had an education in classical music. One can certainly receive a harsh education in classical music from many who have had the education, but I have learned that there are a lot of educated idiots on this forum.

I'm 16 and my mother raised me on classic rock. I can certainly agree that music just isn't what it used to be, that's why I don't really listen to the radio very often. I feel so very sad for our generation, they're just mindlessly buying into what ever is on the radio at the moment and don't take time to search for music with substance. I have an open mind, I tried to listen to rap, but I just can't see how anyone can stand it. But I disagree with the statements about current rock. Of course, the greats can never be touched, but I can appreciate some of the stuff that's out there. Like I said, you just have to search a little. You can find stuff that, while it's not on the level of greatness you're looking for, has some meaning to it and really speaks to a lot of people. But at the end of the day, you just have to realize that we all have different tastes; that's what makes life interesting. As long you know that, keep an open mind, and don't forget where good music came from, you'll be fine. :) (Sorry it's so long.)

Jimmy Page (wow a blast from the past)

I find it quite refreshing to see someone of your age waxing lyrical about the 60's and 70's. Led Zep was (and still is) one of my favourite bands. You and I enjoy the same music and my sentiments are the same insofar as rap is concerned. I chose not to be scathing about rap for fear that I would be banned for life... to put it mildly I personally do not like it at all.

Music Appreciation Lecture. LOL

Do yourself a favour and listen to the old classical music like Bach, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff etc and just (in your mind) change the lead instrument into an electric guitar ----- there is a whole new world out there. Trust me ... I have been a muso for more years than I care to remember.

Good luck

I know what you mean.
I was born in 1993,
and I absolutely love Queen, Abba, The Beatles, The Doors etc.
I think that the reason people today are into older music is because back then music actually meant something.
It was always emotional and always had meaning to somebody. The artists didn't do it mainly for money, and they didn't have fancy machines to fix the imperfections in their voices.

Rap is just bitter, angry people singing about what hard lives they have while they sit in their mansions watching their plasma screen TV's.

I do listen to some stuff being written now, but it just doesn't convey the same deepness that Simon & Garfunkel, John Lennon, and Freddie Mercury could.

I can appreciate the music that is made nowadays and I like a lot of it, just I wouldn't particularly care if it stopped being made. Some songs, like 'Hey There Delilah' by The Plain White T's and 'Wait For You' by Elliot Yamin, I like because they actually seem to have a point. Plus it doesn't take talent to be able to understand and remember all the words.

But I HATE how some artists nowadays think it's cool to take some old beat or tune and incorporate it into their songs, that kils me every time! Like Madonna stole the beginning of one of ABBA's songs and Kanye West just did a remix of 'Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger' which isn't that old but still.

Also, music videos. The ones made back in the 60's to 80's are so awesome! I love them all. Nowadays its just girls in skimpy clothes having clothed sex with a half naked singing man. ugh.
What about 'True Faith' by New Order, thats one of my favorite videos, or 'The Blues Are Still Blue' by Belle & Sebastian, I mean, it takes place in a launderette, and it's amazing. =]

Sorry I rambled on so long, I'm just opinionated.

lol Yeah. I love the music of the 60's and 70's too! I agree with you about the rap and today's rock also. Rap is sometimes gross and negative-sounding and Rock today is a bunch of screaming and poor quality guitar playing. Not all of it though! But some yes...

I was a teen in the 60's and 70's and believe me that there was quality of instrumentation and craft in the music from within. Nowadays, rap and electronic simulation are a larger part of the finished product and prerecorded garbage. I admire a person of your age that will support the music of the ages and timeless pieces, hooray.

The music transcended amongst many generations and isn't really favored that much more by younger generations now...It just has a huge fanbase.

because music nowadays suck! its either about bitches and hoes or cutting yourself. The 60's and 70's had some great artists with creative minds. they were about the music, not about the money.
