I have to look the block of stone over first and foremost, what is it made of? Not all stones can be carved.

Very few stones can be carved with only a hammer and a chisel. To keep things simpple, here are the most common ones- Soft stone such as chalk, soapstone, pumice and Tufa

I will bring the stone to my most favorite carver and ask him the same question you asked me. He will tell me what he sees in the stone that I cant, and how he can make this vision come to life. I hope it is a dragonfly.

I tried it once!!! I even have an automatic chisel, and I couldn't even mark the granite. I could break it if I hit it hard enough, but I couldn't make any nice cuts in it. It would take an unbelievable amount of work to carve stone - and yet there's plenty of granite carvings where you can see the marks of the stone cutter's toothed chisels. Those were some tough guys!

Hands. they'll appear to be holding something, but nothing will be there. honestly, no idea why i'd carve that...but...maybe it's because i've always wanted someone to offer me support and complete trust

Nothing, I would feel as if I were leaving a monument where none is needed. The rock itself is beautiful as it was made.

I meditate on the stone,
run my hands over it
feel what it is,
listen to its story,
and allow the stone to reveal
what it wants me to produce.

A sphere. I was always fascinated by its shape and what it represents: wholeness, infinity, perfection...
