While cleaning the underside of my lawnmower the other day, I tilted it to the wrong side - with the air filter facing down. Some oil came out through the air filter, so I had to replace that, but the engine does not start. Does anyone know what part(s) need(s) to be replaced/cleaned ?

Did you check the spark plug? Remove it, if there is oil on it or if it is real black try to clean it real good and don't forget to wipe out the hole that it goes into also. replace it and try to start it again. If the spark plug can't be cleaned then buy a new one they're only a couple of dollars. I keep several on hand here in Texas as well as an extra filter or two!

Number one - dont lean lawnmowers on thier side, UNLESS the oil and fuel is removed first.
Most likely the oil has leaked into the combusttion chamber, remove the spark plug and try turning the engine over a few times, see if any residual oil lies in there ( you cannot compress a liquid) - use wd40/ pb blaster to remove/thin it out.
Put a fresh plug in, dump a capful of gas into the carburator and try starting it- it should run- it might smoke some for a bit, but it's just burning the leftover oil.
Now, if it wont start- its possible the flywheel key broke - that requires removing the flywheel cover and flywheel nut to see - if its sheared ( a keyway between the crankshaft end and flywheel should line up - if they dont, then the flywheel needs to be pulled and a new key installed. Use a light dab of never seize on the crank end, so it wont rust on. Use a flywheel puller to pull the flywheel, dont use a prybar/hammer - it'll shatter).

there is a cardboard-like seal behind your air filter and if it's torn while replacing the air filter, the mower won't start. i had to replace this and it fixed the problem. also you can clean your air filter with mineral spirits or engine degreaser rather than replace it. soak it, let set, then rinse with hot water, let dry throughly.

It is possible that you got oil into the upper part of the cylinder. Check the spark plug for oil.
