Can anyone advise me what to do, my little girl who will be 8yrs old next month has asked for a Nintendo Wii from Santa. I was going to buy it last month but the sales guy at Curry's said wait to October and they would be doing good deals. Well went to day and no place on earth has one. I could buy 1 from Amazon at £279 the same item 3 weeks ago would have cost £179. I dont know what to do. Is the Wii worth all the hassle and extra dosh or would a playstation 2 or 3 be better. She likes all the singing stuff and likes games like Big Brain and Dogs that she has for the DS lite. I dont know what to do as I havent a clue which console is the best. Please help.

If I was to buy the Wii from the States would I not have a problem with the voltage being different and our plugs are different, or if there was a fault how would I get it repaired ?

From all the advice, the Wii seems the best way to go and I would love to get her one, though it is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Thanks to all that replied

Well did it, managed to get a Wii on Amazon and paid over the odds, though I suppose it is from Santa and not something she will believe in for much longer. Thanks again for all the help

If you ever wish to buy a Nintendo Wii... remember they're really hard to come buy; because they're still in limited supplies. You got to ask around by calling stores and arriving before opening times.
Plus it helps to think about it before the holiday rush... because the're still a lot of people who wish to get Wii's that don't have them. But most people can get lucky; since most people got them on launch back on November 19, 2006.
Plus Nintendo fans are way nicer than XBox and PS3 fans. If you line up for getting a Wii, you'll be around a nice group of people who are friendly.
And if you wish to get a Wii, think about some of the best games for it... like these:
The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess
Pokemon Battle Revolution (best works with copies of Pokemon Diamond or Pearl, and a DS.)
Super Mario Galaxy (comes out November 12)
Super Smash Bros. Brawl (comes out December 3)
There's also other great Nintendo games to choose from, it just depends on your genre of games you like; I'm sure you'll find something, if you especially love the Nintendo DS and its games.
You can also try looking into Zelda Phantom Hourglass for the DS, for your daughter; since I'm sure you'll like that game!
If you can't find one by calling up stores; consult buying one from trusted online stores like Amazon or my personal favorite, and how I got mine, EBay. If you try EBay, you'll definately have to pay a whole lot more, and try to look for one that has the best price deal, and least amount of bids. I got mine for $400.
So good luck working up the money and trying to find a Wii!
Its best to go for a Nintendo Wii anyway, because its more of a family fun & based video game system.
Anyone who think the PS3 & XBox360 are better, and say the Wii sucks, are stupid fan boys and only care about games with superior high def graphics & way to much violent games.
(And yes I'm mentioning this due to the fact that the person's answer below mine mentioned nothing good about the Wii)

There is no game. Sony's problem is twofold - one, BlueRay chips. There is a massive shortage and the chips are very expensive. Part of the delay is the ability to include the BlueRay drive. The other issue is price - When you loose 200-300 dollars per unit sold you have to limit the number that go into distribution. Nintendo's problem isn't a problem at all, it's experience. Their plan for 4M units by Christmas should fit the demand perfectly, given all their past history. What cannot be accounted for is highly successful marketing and competitor's failures. Nintendo could hope that the Wii would sell like mad, but they wouldn't bank on it. Now that it is catching on faster and harder than anticipated they will certainly bump up the production schedule. Price gouging for the holidays has nothing to do with it. In fact, if you see a Wii on sale in a store for more than $249 then you can bet that it is the store that is gouging and they should be reported. And no one who knows anything about this race will be buying a 360... They average life span has been 6 months at best. So many have failed that a class action lawsuit is in the works.

First of all, if value is a concern, then the PS3 is out of the picture.
Any store that sells the Wii should be selling it for 179 GBP. I wouldn't buy it from Amazon, if it's trying to overcharge you.
I don't live in the UK, but here in the US, the Wii is becoming easier and easier to find. My girlfriend works at a game store and they are getting regular shipments now. So you could just keep calling stores and asking if they have any in stock.
I think they won't be completely impossible to find until next month.
However, I wouldn't write off the PS2. It is a solid system with thousands of great games. You should consider EyeToy. It's not the same as the Wii, but they offer motion-controlled games.
You can read about the various EyeToy games on sites like IGN.com
http://search.ign.com/products?query=eyetoy
Here are some other PS2 games she might enjoy:
DDR: http://search.ign.com/products?query=ddr&platformSearch=PlayStation%202
SingStar:
http://search.ign.com/products?query=singstar&platformSearch=PlayStation%202
Edit:
There are differences between the systems in different regions. Voltage is one, but you can buy adapters. However, the games are region-locked. So you couldn't buy games from local stores. That's likely the bigger problem of importing a system.

For a child tha wii is tha best choice. First off, tha wii has child oriented games that they will be able to comprehend. Alot of childrens movies turn into video games and our put on the nintedo wii console. And bcause it is motion sensored, she will not have to press to many buttons. The Ps2 has been out for many years now and they may stop making games for that system altogether soon. Pretty much what I am saying is tha system is outdated.
The Ps3 is expensive. The most expensive one is 600 dollars and tha cheapest is 500 dollars They are goin to release an even cheaper one but they will most likely make it 400 dollas. The wii is about 268 dollas and that is including tax. New games for the PS3 start at 60 bucks. New games for tha wii start t 50 bucks and sometimes 40 bucks. I have a wii and it is tha best system I have ever had. I advise yu to get tha wii.
As far as looking for one kee tryin. Every store that sells them will definently be gettin more shipments bcause of Black Friday in November and Christmas in December. They may even drop the price down 50 bucks.
These are U.S. dollas by tha way.

Don't dish out £279 it isn't worth that much just try every were like every week you will get one for £179 or less and Wii sports with it. Just whatever you do DO NOT get a ps3 they cost too much they don't really have anything different and Sony have so many that soon they will be really cheap like after Xmas, Sony have have already dropped the price of it by like £200 so just be patient.

i think a playstation 3 would maybe be a bit too extreme for your daughter, if you want a cheap revolutionary fun console then i would reccomend the wii, the playstation 2 should bring equal satisfaction only at a fraction of the price, but without all the new technology,
Personally i would go for the wii, as the ps2 is getting a little outdated.

We have a Wii, and my sister has playstation. I find that there are more games suitable for younger children for the Wii. I don't want my kids on fighting games. Keep looking for a Wii they are out there !
