Low brake fluid because of brake pad wear.

Or

Park brake lever switch fault.

ADDED: Don't add brake fluid......Have your brakes serviced.

What you have read seems right. You probably haven't noticed, but I would bet your cars braking system has gone downhill since you first started driving the car. Definitely check your brake fluid first. Heck, quit reading this and go do it NOW!!! To do so, take a paper towel or rag with you. 1. Check your brake fluid by looking at the reservoir. There will be lines on it where it should be. If you can't see, open it up by: 2. Wipe off the brake fluid cover and reservoir. Make sure there isn't any chance of getting dirt in your brake fluid... NOT GOOD. 3. Have a look. I would think that it will be at least half way full. If it is really nasty and dirty looking, have it replaced. Brake fluid is clear. 4. Add more if you are low. DOT III is the kind to use. About $3 at the parts store. If you need to add, it's most likely because your pads/shoes are worn. They really aren't all that costly to replace and you will be glad you did.

Year of auto matters a bit, so does make. Usually is just a bad circuit in the wiring. Could be a faulty read on the brake system, could be a need for adjustment back to factory settings as they were when new.
You can let it nickel and dime you to a point where buying a new car would have been better.
Take it to a trusted mechanic and have the Brake system checked out, because it actually could be something that is on the edge of busting loose and failing.
If it is a new car then take it to the dealer and ask them to fix it, that is what warranties are for.
Manual brake makes it sound like it is a Manual Gearbox with a Parking Brake. You know the click, click, click when you engage it? That has a sensor on it that lets the electronic sensor know when it is engaged and lights come on. Is a solenoid in the wire harness that could have gone bad or an adjustment to the brake cable is needed. But regardless it is the brakes, they are the most important part of a motor vehicle so have it checked by a mechanic that knows that make, model and year of the automobile.

The brake light is an all-purpose indicator, used to bring the driver's attention to the braking system.

It can, simply, be telling you that the parking brake lever is still engaged. It can warn you if your brakes need some kind of servicing, such as fluid, or, in some cars, worn pads or shoes. It may be warning your that there is air in the brake lines, but, you'd probably "feel" that when you press the brake.

And, as someone mentioned, the switch, either at the emergency brake, or the brake pedal, may be faulty.

In any case, this is one warning light that you shouldn't ignore, simply because the brakes feel all right. The light may be trying to warn you of a potential problem. Check it out.

Don't EVER mess with your brakes yourself. Have your dad, brother, boyfriend, whatever take your car in to get serviced for you. It's a sad world when women are STILL getting ripped off at the service station, but unless you're tight with your mechanic, don't trust them.

I know I'm going to get a thumbs down from SOMEONE about this, but it's true.
