The problem is behind the drum of the washer. It probably needs to be taken apart and cleaned by a appliance technician. If you cannot do that, take a bottle of Febreeze and spray around the inside edge of the drum. I do this when the washer starts smelling like mildew. You could also do this with a diluted bleach solution. Be sure to wipe the reside off so it doesn't get on your colored clothes later. Don't pour anything behind the drum, as this can cause water to stand inside the washer between the drum and the washer and stagnate.

If you run your washing machine on the highest setting and first add a cup of bleach , do the same again and add a cup of vinegar. This will give your machine a good clean inside and also clean the water inlets

When a washer sits for a while algae and old water can really stink.Your washer has a water pump in it,and this must be flushed with very hot water or compressed air, then cleaned with a water/bleach mixture.

There could be some sort of gross sludge underneath the drum...where all the little holes are....the last owner could have had a really dirty job....try putting a boil wash on having first poured bleach down the drum.

even if you dispose of it through the council it will not go to landfill as they need to meet stringent recycling targets .if you have access to a car take it to your local recycling centre they will either sell it on if its worth it or dismantle and recycle it .The council usually charge separately for bulky items you cannot just put it out with your normal rubbish .Recycle centres do not charge. The company you buy your new machine may take the old one and recycle it as part of the delivery service.
