My dad was a miner ,but we were not that poor
My Mam used to clean peoples houses to earn extra money I can remember really cold winter nights ,
We would all be sitting around the coal fire , with the wind howling and Mam making lovely toast on a toasting fork on a blazing coal fire
We had a really happy childhood even though we didn't have a lot

Sitting in front of a lovely coal fire. Nice and warm at the front but a cold back because we didn't have double glazing and the windows and doors were ill fitting and draughty !.The first TV we had, I was 15. Mum taking us down town at lunch time from school to hear the "proclamation", when King George 6th died and our present Queen was proclaimed. I could go on for ever with my memories !

We got oranges just at Christmas, I had to have my appendix out to get a box of chocs, we wore our last year's school pumps all through the summer and got new ones for the new term, we had a smelly paraffin heater in the bathroom so we were clean but couldnt breathe that well, my mum got up really early in winter to start the fire up, we got one pint of milk a day between six of us, we always had tomato soup for lunch on Mondays and Sundays leftover meat (bones) made into stew for tea. God, Im not even that old!!

that was luxury, half a cream cracker! we were lucky if we got to lick the lard knife.
but they were good days where as soon as the kids were 10 yrs old they were down the Pit working 20 hrs a day.
not like the Scum today, they dont know what work is.

Getting dressed up to go to the movies. It was such a treat. We would be excited for days before we went. Remember the wide eyed wonder at the magic of the silver screen.

I love the old days. I remember the whole family sitting round my Granddad sucking a peppermint to keep us warm.
