I do not know too much- is it an atom?

The smallest meaningful length, according to quantum mechanics, is the Planck length. See the second reference for the known subatomic particles. For those with lowest mass or energy, 'size' isn't a particularly meaningful description.

The 'strings' of superstring theory aren't exactly 'things', they are mathematical constructs. Of course, that's only if some superstring theory or M-brane theory actually turns out to be correct and useful.

A quark, possibly - maybe a preon.

Or a superstring - if they exist.

Not atoms, they're made up of protons, neutrons and electrons.

i was tempted to say quarks,i think there's six flavours up,down, top, bottom, charm and strange.quarks are made up of still smaller particles called leptons.
