Desperate I suppose. Maybe they aren't capable of posting an intelligent Q that will get people interested in it and who want to share it with their contacts.
You dont get any points for stars but they show how 'interesting' your Q was and lets your contacts know that you answered it and they might like it too.

yes stars get you extra points (1 pt. per star and u can get up to 50 pts.)
