It depends on your website. If you are using it to sell things, you will get money. Or you can sign up for affiliate programs. That means that you can have a banner for Amazon or some other company, and when people visit your site they can click on the ad and then you will get a small amount of money every time someone clicks.

My web hosting costs $7.50 per month and $8.00 a year for the domain name.

You pay for a domain name from a company like GoDaddy, so you can purchase www.coolpage.com or something like that for like 2$ a year or some price.

But then you need either to host the website yourself or pay a company to host it for you, which is where it gets pricey. You could set up your own PC to host the website, but if you turn the computer off, the website will go down. Almost all websites are hosted by 3rd party companies so they are available 24/7.

Whether or not you make money from it depends on what you offer.

It depends on what you want from the site. If you just want people to see your puppy or kitty then more than likely you will not profit from such a site.
On the other hand if you create cute puppy and kitty "what nots" and sell them I would expert you could earn some money. You can also sign up for "Click for pay" adds, that display on your site. If someone clicks the add the sponsor will pay you so much.
You can make money with a web site you just have to be creative and find a way of drwing traffic to your site.
