Sherlock Holmes was a fictional detective that was based on a real-life doctor, Dr. Joseph Bell.

He was just a detective, but a brilliant one!. His companion, Dr Watson was an ex military doctor. Arthur Conan Doyle created the fictional duo and there's a museum in London at the famous 221 Baker Street address which you can visit.

P.S. Sherlock never said "Elementary my dear Watson" as many people believe. This was introduced by Basil Rathbone during the filming of the series between about 1939-1944.

He was a detective. The "doctor" was his friend and "sidekick" Dr. James Watson. Watson was a doctor in the British army, but he also had a private practice once he got out of the armed services.
They are both, of course, the fictional creations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Interestingly enough, the famous "catch-phrase"

"It's elementary, my dear Watson"

Is never uttered in ANY of the stories.
