Surprisingly, it's a TV movie: "Truman Capote's The Glass House" (1972). After watching it, I always feel as if I've been pummeled because it packs some major punches, scenes so powerful that it's hard to shake them.
Alan Alda stars as a gentle family man who finds himself imprisoned for an impulsive act that resulted in the death of a man he believed killed his wife and child. Clu Gulager is the new "block cop" who is being told to ignore the signs of corruption. Believe me, this is a gritty, powerful film. Also in the cast is Vic Morrow, Billy Dee Williams and Dean Jagger. It was filmed at a state prison in Utah, and many of the extras are actual prisoners. It is unrelentingly grim.

Drama, as defined by me as being without any comedic elements. I would have to say, The Battle of Algiers(1966).
