What is the meaing of life?

I personally believe we can find out when we realise why we are,who put us here and where we are going.

80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.

I've come to two conclusions recently:

1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.

First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.

Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.


To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

I disagree! How can the "meaning" of life (assumed that is what you mean and your question is a typo?) possibly be the answer to; Why are we here, who put up here & where are we going? How does having answers to these questions give life meaning?

Life just IS.
Does "life" have to have a meaning you can put into words?
I find things are far more "emotive" and sensed. A sense of purpose... A sense of just "knowing" it will all make sense even if you can't understand it now. There are so many things in life which make no logical or scientific sense, things can't always be said or expressed in words.

We are here because we are... does it matter why? As for who put us here... the god squad will say god put us here, others will say it was our parents, its DNA and genetics, a coincidence, an accident.... why do you want to know who put you here? How would that change your out look on life? As for where we are going... we are all going somewhere and nowhere at the same time. Every day lived takes you one day closer towards death and your end. You are going to die, that much is certain. But that isn't all doom and gloom. Its liberating. It means that your life as it is now WILL cease and END. So you have to just "get on with it" now.

I think every single person has to find their own pertinent, personal meaning and reason for living. For many "mums" they get their purpose and meaning from caring for their kids and family....Some people have a deeply spiritual nature and find their meaning through god or a strong spiritual belief. Some people are very shallow and very competitive and for them their meaning is about the accumulation of more and more; possessions, experience, gadgets, cars, holidays... money etc. For some its about EXPERIENCES, doing things to get the experiences they give.... the thrill, excitement, fear, fun etc. Its about FEELINGS.

For me, I don't think there is any meaning. It really doesn't mean anything, but it doesn't have to or need to. It just IS. I just AM. I get up each day and each day is as it is. To be lived. whether it means anything or nothing you still have to live it and get on with it! You hope you learn new things, progress forward and not backward. Experience new things. Move towards enlightenment... Give what you can, of yourself, your time... make your life and other people's lives easier and happier if you can. Stretch your mind, be stimulated, where you are going doesn't matter, what matters is that you ARE moving and going SOMEWHERE. Its about accepting people, all people, having respect and trying to be one of the "good 'un's!" People worry about making the "right" decision... but there isn't any right or wrong decision the right one is the one you make. You just have to make it with conviction, clear mind and pure heart.

Why is it that every time someone asks this question people think they are smart-arses and are being original with their answer of 42 - reference to the Hitch hikers guide? I am sick of seeing that stupid, unimaginative reply. Why bother to reply if all you are going to say? 42. ?? Its a FICTIONAL NOVEL.

In 2 words "to exist".

In more I would think we are here to make a difference. Whether that is inventing something, providing a service, creating a family, developing things, entertain, etc. So many possibilities but we all make such an impression and influence direction in so many other peoples lives without even realising sometimes.

I don't know why the bad people are here...to make things harder, to learn, to make the good ones closer. I dunno

Impossible question to answer because it assumes that Life has a meaning which can be found beyond the definition of life that we choose to put upon it. Life is...live it ...think of more interesting questions!

Hm... no reason. But having a chance to live longer can help us find out how to make us live forever. But then again the world wil be overpopulated.... heh.... OH. Then in the future we'll either be smart enough to make the generations go on OR completely kill it and the world will be chaos. :]

One time passing of living issues. the stable issues you have executed in a existence, i've got faith it is going to reproduction you. additionally the undesirable issues. yet, it somewhat is rather frustrating to assert the meaning of existence. All you're able to do is do the ideal on your existence. do no longer throw it like a rubbish.
