For the sake of argument humans evoled from an "ape-like" ancestor ( apes evolved along side us from the same ancestor but enough of that) Apes evolved from a monkey-like ancestor, they in turn evolved from a opposum like ancestor which in turn evolved from a smaller rodent like ancestor....

Actually we didn't evolve from apes. Modern apes and humans share common ancestors that were morphologically different from present-day species. That's the thing about biological evolution--everything's always changing.

If you are really curious, there is plenty of research on primate evolution. If you want something a little easier to read that might point you in some good directions for future reading, check out www.talkorigins.org. They have a great Q&A section that addresses alot of common ideas about evolution that are often misunderstood.

Apes evolved from monkeys & monkeys evolved from the prosimians (a small shrew like critter alive 65 Million yrs ago when the Dinosars were killed off.) One can carry this all the way back to one celled animals when they split from plants. All the dinosars did not die off... birds evolved from them.
